I can hardly believe it, but I am a Food Blog is come up on three years old! Waaaaay back in 2012, my very first post was Afternoon Beer, a little Valentine’s Day treat I thought up for Mike. This year, to celebrate my blog birthday and Valentine’s day, I thought I’d do a Afternoon Beer redux.
But just what is Afternoon Beer you ask? Well, as obsessed as I am with fancy tea rooms and tiers of tiny food, Mike isn’t such a fan. I love whiling away the hours with fancy tea sandwiches, scones and clotted cream and mini desserts, but apparently it’s not really a boy thing. In defence of tea time and tiny foods everywhere, I created Afternoon Beer, man-approved minature snacks that go great with beer.
Over the next two weeks I’ll be sharing all the recipes, but for now, here’s a sneak peek of my 2015 Afternoon Beer Redux. I skipped out on the classic tiers because I thought a wooden board would be more manly, but I still kind of went along with what’s served at afternoon tea.
For savouries we have: Mini Lasanga Cups with Ricotta and Spicy Ragu, Mini Beef and IPA Cheddar Crust Pies, and Black Pepper Gougère BLTS. Instead of the classic scones with clotted cream and jam, I made Mini Green Onion Cream Cheese Biscuits and Spicy Sausage Gravy. And of course I did a tiny sweets course with Baby Cinnamon Buns with Whiskey Cream Cheese Frosting and an IPA Beeramisu.
Mini food and ice cold beer for the win! A happy (early, in this case) Valentine’s Day indeed.
PS – Check out the difference between my very first post and this one! Isn’t it crazy!?
PPS – The gorgeous board in the photos can be found here!
awesome! Can’t wait for this.
This is the best idea EVER!!!! I need to take a leaf out of your book for girlfriending — B2 perks up at the mention of anything beer, and treats to go along with it is such a cute cute idea! I LOVE it. And AAHHHHH GREEN ONION BISCUITS! I just made some the other day and I’m obsessedddd. I can’t wait to see more about yours!! From this sneak peek they look sosososo cute <3!! And Beeramisu (!!) and mini lasagna cups.. Can't wait for all of this!
That’s one really nice post, me like!
okay, afternoon beer is officially the most amazing idea i’ve ever heard of.
Mini lasagna cups – sounds brilliant! Can’t wait for the recipe.
Excited to see what the next couple of posts bring! Happy blog birthday!!
Oh my goodness. I love everything about this. Can’t wait to for all these goodies, especially the baby cinnamon buns with whiskey cream cheese frosting!! And yay for three years of i am a food blog!!
Woah Steph what an amazing idea!! I love tea time too. Growing up my uncle used to throw my cousin and me fabulous tea parties. But Phil, although a lover of tea, could never throw himself into tea time. Like Mike- he would think it’s too fussy for him but afternoon beer is a great spin. I can’t wait to see more! xo Nicole
YAY IM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS COLUMN
also, how far you’ve come from your first i am a food blog post! it’s really cool to see how much you’ve grown. i still remember momofuku for 2 too!
oh my gosh this is too cute Stephanie – how thoughtful of you!
omg! how can you do so many dishes at once! And everything’s in a pair, hahaa so cute. Was this “manly afternoon beer” really just a party of two?
hahaha it definitely took a while to make – i spaced it out over two days. and we ate ALL the things. just took us a couple of days hahahaha
What a fantastic idea! I know my man (and brother, uncle, best male friend etc….) would go absolutely crazy for this. Much as I love a traditional afternoon tea, I would quite happily settle down to an afternoon beer too. Looking forward to the recipes to follow!

What a great idea! My boyfriend’s b’day is coming up, and this would be perfect for it. He’s kind of a craft beer nerd, but I think he’d have fun choosing the beer pairings for snacks like this.
I love fancy tea, but you’re right- it’s such a girlie indulgence. I LOVE the idea of afternoon beer to get guys on board. Hmmm. Genius.
I absolutely love this idea! I love tea, too, but afternoon beer sounds a little more fun!

Gorgeous set up! And happy 3rd anniversary – the blog has definitely come a long way since! :)
This is amazing! Can’t wait to see all the recipes. I think this might be what I do for Valentines day with the hubs.
I started silently following your blog after you left Momofuku for 2 and started i am food blog and vividly remember how I was very intrigued at the idea of high tea beer.
Love the photography and you definitely inspired me for my very own blog. Keep up the great stuff and I look forward to more recipes.
Afternoon Beer — this sounds like something I must talk all of my town’s bars into doing. I mean, who wouldn’t want this?
